Abe’s incredible 1980s work from Osaka. Despite its hard-edged street photography style, the book is suffused with the atmosphere of a very bad dream, its recurring motifs creating a powerful and unsettling tension throughout.
Citizens 1979–1983 ranks among Abe’s very best and it’s now hard to find. A personal favorite and my highest recommendation.
