Chile Ayer Hoy

$20.00

Published in the wake of the 1973 Chilean coup d'état, which removed Salvador Allende from power, Chile Ayer Hoy (Chile Yesterday / Today) was produced by the military regime of Augusto Pinochet as a piece of visual propaganda, making the case for life under the junta.

Each spread is split in two. On the left, framed in black, are images of the Unidad Popular years, presented as scenes of disorder, empty shops, demonstrations, and unrest. On the right, often photographed in the same locations, are their supposed opposites, quiet streets, stocked markets, students back at their desks, clean walls.

The message is blunt and carefully staged. Through layout, sequencing, and graphic design, the book draws a stark before-and-after, presenting the post-coup period as one of order, stability, and prosperity, while omitting the processes by which this “order” was achieved.
