Bonten Taro was born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1929. Although renowned as a *gekiga* (dramatic manga) artist, his primary profession is that of a tattoo artist.

With a career spanning two decades, he has inked over a thousand clients. In the insular world of tattooing—a realm traditionally bound to the strict reproduction of inherited designs—he has successively introduced innovative techniques such as machine tattooing and multi-color work, earning him the reputation of an "iconoclast" among his peers.
